Our Talented Secondary Teachers
Our highly qualified team of teachers are committed to educating young people to be proactive, sensitive, and well balanced. They guide our students to develop a thirst for knowledge throughout their lives and a willingness to play a positive role within the community, whether in Peru or any other part of the world.
Our Specialty Learning Areas
During Upper School at Colegio Peruano Británico, our students become more confident with experimentation, analysis, and reflection. They develop their ability to influence, change, enjoy, and improve the quality of life, directly assuming a commitment to their environment. As a result, our students begin to understand their own thinking mechanisms, recognise their learning techniques, and integrate the use of technologies in different areas of their knowledge. We focus on debates, writing, and drama in English as well as in Spanish. At this stage, our students also test the level they have achieved in English and French, through the international FCE exams in English, organised by Cambridge University, and the CAF and DELF exams in French, organised by Alliance Française.
English
At Colegio Peruano Británico, we know English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world as an ‘international language’. It’s a recognised ‘lingua franca’ bridging people who speak different languages and closing the gaps between countries around the world.
In Upper School, we emphasise the importance of being proficient in English as a global communication tool that facilitates access to many of the best academic, scientific, cultural, and professional opportunities.
Communication
Our students’ communication is developed using language, a fundamental tool in their education. Language allows them to be aware of themselves as they organise and give meaning to their experiences and knowledge.
French
Our teaching of French focuses on competencies and international standards, such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the International Baccalaureate Programme. At the end of the school year, students in the first grade of Secondary School will have attained A1 / A2 level in the three relevant competencies (according to the DELF International Standards) to then take the DELF A2 exams in their second year.
French is an important tool in today’s world that opens our students’ possibility of entry to many international universities and companies in a globalised world. Our Upper School students at Colegio Peruano Británico compete with students of various nationalities, earning important achievements both in Peru and abroad.
Mathematics
At Colegio Peruano Británico, our students learn mathematics to become capable of searching, organising, systematising, and analysing data and information; to understand and interpret the world that surrounds them logically; to make appropriate decisions and solve problems in different quantitative situations; and to be flexible in their use of mathematical strategies.
Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
Science and technology are present in various contexts of human activity, playing a part in the development of knowledge and culture in our societies, and changing our concepts of the universe and our ways of life. Our students become capable of questioning themselves; of seeking information that is reliable; of systematising, analysing, and explaining information to make decisions based on scientific knowledge; and of considering the social and environmental implications. Our students use scientific knowledge to constantly learn and be able to understand the phenomena that occur around them.
Current Peruvian Issues
As a significant part of our Upper School international education in Peru, in our ‘Current Peruvian Issues’ course, our students study and analyse individuals and society in political, social, economic, religious, technological, and cultural contexts. To achieve this, our students consult a variety of sources, both primary and secondary, to search for explanations and to analyse the past. This enables them to shape and express their opinions with critical perspectives.
Social Sciences
We live in a world that’s constantly changing, where new challenges and opportunities arise for personal and social development. Significantly, at Colegio Peruano Británico, we develop citizens who are critical and proactive about social, environmental, and economic problems.
Our Social Sciences area teaches our students to become aware of the increasingly global society they live in and of their responsibility to become agents of change in social issues, through the management of environmental and economic resources.
Additionally, this area encourages students to identify with their country and with the world in general. They learn that they’re part of a community and that, however diverse, they share the same history and participate in the construction of a common future, for the benefit of their country and of the world.
Global Politics and Citizenship
Democracy in the 21st century demands that Colegio Peruano Británico plays an important role in the civic education of our students ¬– aiding them to become agents of change and capable of thinking and acting actively in response to the demands presented in the school, community, and country.
These demands and challenges are an opportunity for our students to form as citizens who are sure of themselves; who identify with their culture and country; and who are active and committed, capable of proposing initiatives to improve their school community and country.
For this reason, through personal, social, and civic education, we help our students to develop a personal identity and active participation as a citizen committed to civic values.
Religion and Ethics
The aim of our Religion and Ethics course is for our students to develop a sense of curiosity in others' religious beliefs as well as an understanding of why different groups of people behave the way they do. Throughout our Religion and Ethics lessons, our students are encouraged to express their opinions while critically and sensitively considering the views of others.
During our Form 1 course, our students are primarily focused on exploring the basic beliefs of the three Abrahamic faiths of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, examined through the lens of leadership. Our Form 2 course is orientated towards the three principal eastern religions of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism, and encourages our students to examine the role of metaphor in religion.
Our Religion and Ethics course is also an opportunity for our students to develop their skills of analysis and evaluation, in addition to their English language skills.
Pre-TOK, the Theory of Knowledge
Our pre-TOK, or Theory of Knowledge, course has been designed as an introduction to the IB-level TOK course that students will study in the following year. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) plays a special role in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP), by giving the opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and how we know what we claim to know. The TOK requirement is central to the educational philosophy of the IBDP.
As a thoughtful and purposeful enquiry into different ways of knowing, and into different kinds of knowledge, TOK is focused around two questions: ‘what do we know?’ and ‘how do we know?’. Through discussions of these and other questions, our students gain a greater awareness of their personal and ideological assumptions, as well as develop an appreciation of the diversity and richness of cultural perspectives. TOK provides coherence for our students by linking academic subject areas and transcending them.
Our pre-TOK course develops our students’ skills of analysis and evaluation, in addition to their English language skills.
The Visual Arts
Our Upper School visual arts course gives our students a deeper understanding of the creative process, where this process of creation is valued as much as the material product.
This course aims to educate artists. It raises our students’ awareness around artistic manifestations over time and their relationship with the context in which the artist lives. It contributes to the development of self-esteem as they learn to recognise themselves as valuable individuals who can participate in the community through art.
Music
In Upper School at Colegio Peruano Británico, our students consolidate their musical knowledge, practice their musical production, and make an assertive use of ICTs, which help develop their creativity. We further examine the tools for appreciation, comparison, differentiation, and analysis.
Music activates complex centres within our nervous system, generating substantial changes in our daily lives. Our students build their concentration, attention, and visual and auditory memory skills. They also develop basic and complex motor skills; achieve a better sense of self-confidence; and improve their socialisation and empathetic interpersonal relationships.
Business Management
Business management is an important and popular course at Colegio Peruano Británico, as our students learn crucial business tools and theories, which they can apply to real-world businesses. Our course shows how businesses operate in diverse fields and how the external environment affects them.
Fully supported by a range of real-life examples from a range of sources, our business management course is rewarding and intriguing. Our business program helps develop entrepreneurial skills in our students and prepares them for an exciting future with the skills and knowledge to be successful.
Physical Education
Our physical education lessons are at the forefront of the newest in social, scientific, and technological developments. We emphasise the creation of good habits related to physical, psychological, and emotional well-being, and our students develop critical awareness around maintaining their health and helping the good health of others.
Information Technology
Information and communication technologies, or ICTs, create possibilities for our students’ expression, communication, and interaction with equality and inclusion. At Colegio Peruano Británico, we utilise virtual environments created by scenarios, spaces, and objects formed by ICTs, and we educate our students to become responsible digital citizens.
Additionally, our robotics course helps our students become capable of building objects that carry out processes by employing simple machinery and programming to solve problems in their surroundings. This gives our students opportunities to apply their creativity and perseverance to their understanding of our world.
OUR UPPER SCHOOL WORKSHOPS
Drama workshops
Drama at Colegio Peruano Britanico supports the development of our students’ emotional intelligence through the practice and improvement of verbal and non-verbal communication skills, critical perception, dramatic imagination, and performance.
Through drama, our students boost their intra-personal skills and qualities, such as autonomy, self-confidence, self-motivation, emotional and time management, reflection, and evaluation skills through independent and group activities. They also enhance their interpersonal skills and their ability to work cooperatively, respectfully, and efficiently in pairs and small groups.
Our drama programme helps our students learn to appreciate cultural and artistic manifestations in a critical way and create projects through artistic languages. In this way, our students become successful and emotionally healthy citizens.
Robotics and Arduino workshops
Our robotics workshops at Colegio Peruano Británico encourage our students to approach technology in a friendly and enjoyable way. Our students develop their creativity and teamwork skills using Arduinos to build prototypes and to solve real-world problems.
Through logical sequence programming, our workshops seek to develop creative and computational thinking. Our students develop an interest in the world of electronics and robotics, in which they can create projects of their own. They use real sensors – such as soil hydro-metres to measure the humidity of soil – and they programme intelligent irrigation to encourage a better use of water as a resource. They also use ultrasonic sensors ¬– that enable the identification of objects four metres away – and programme intrusion alarms, sound sensors to activate lights for home automation, and other equipment.
Today, Arduinos help us to learn how the world works and how human beings interact with technology. They open the door to investigating how these technologies work in the present and how they can work in the future.
